# AI drive-thru for independent restaurants and small chains

Most AI drive-thru vendors sell to chains. What a single store or small group can ask, fix first and test on one lane before it signs.

An independent restaurant that wants AI drive-thru ordering first has to find a vendor that will sell to one store. Most vendors describe their customers as QSR brands and franchise groups, and Toast Drive-Thru opens first to brands with 15 or more locations. Ask each vendor about single stores on the first call, fix the lane basics, and test on one lane with a written stop rule.

The difference matters because vendors built their process for chains. Hi Auto's home page speaks to "IT teams" and describes installing, tuning across more stores, then scaling to 25 before a rollout across the chain. At a single store, the owner or one manager does that work between shifts. This page covers who the vendors say they serve, what to ask, what to fix first and a six-week trial sized for one lane. For how the system works from speaker post to ticket, see [how AI drive-thru ordering works](https://maple.inc/blog/ai-drive-thru). For which chains use it, see the [chain tracker](https://maple.inc/blog/fast-food-chains-ai-drive-thru).

## Who do AI drive-thru vendors say they sell to?

Each row comes from the vendor's own site or press release. None of them prints a price.

Where no minimum is printed, ask about single stores on the first call. For a wider list with each vendor's lane hardware and POS partners, see the [AI drive-thru vendor comparison](https://maple.inc/blog/ai-drive-thru-vendors).

## What should a single store ask on the first call?

1. **Do you install at one store?** Ask how many single-store customers are live and for one you can call.
2. **What must my lane already have?** Name your headset system, speaker post, order confirmation board and POS version. HME says its [NEXEO Pro headset system](https://www.hme.com/qsr/drive-thru-voice-ai-ordering/) is built to support the voice AI provider a restaurant chooses, and that other systems need added audio boxes. If a vendor needs new headsets, price that into the trial.
3. **Who builds and updates my menu in your system?** Presto's [Presto Voice page](https://presto.com/voice-ai/) describes a menu service that puts a restaurant's menu data into one format. Ask who does that work for you, how long it takes, and whether a price change or a new special costs extra.
4. **Who listens when the AI gets stuck?** Presto lists modes where the AI leads with remote agents watching, and modes where remote agents lead. Ask which mode you would get, and how your own crew takes the order back mid-sentence.
5. **How is it priced?** Per lane, per store or per order; hardware bought, leased or included; install fee; contract length.
6. **What happens if I stop, sell or close?** Ask about the exit fee, who removes the hardware and what happens to the recordings.
7. **When is support open?** Ask whether a person answers the support line during your late-night shift.

## What can a small operator fix first, or do instead?

A crackling speaker, a slow window or a menu board guests cannot read causes trouble for an AI order taker as much as for a crew member. Several fixes cost less and make any later trial easier to judge.

Step Why it can come first Read more
Time the lane You need your own order and service times before any trial means anything Drive-thru timers and a hand-timing sheet
Fix the audio An AI hears the same crackle and wind your crew hears Speaker posts and headset systems
Clean up the menu board Item names and prices on the board have to match what the AI and the POS know Drive-thru menu boards
Check the POS path AI orders have to land in your POS with every modifier and price Drive-thru AI and POS integration
Automate the phone first If the phone rings through the rush and pulls someone off the headset, phone ordering may be the simpler first test Phone ordering vs drive-thru

Phone ordering is also easier to price. Maple Pro, which takes phone orders into supported POS systems, is $350/month billed monthly or $220/month billed yearly on the [Maple pricing page](https://maple.inc/pricing).

## What does a one-lane trial look like at a small store?

The full [one-lane pilot worksheet](https://maple.inc/blog/ai-drive-thru-pilot-checklist) lists every measure and test script. The plan below trims it to what one manager per shift can run, using a phone stopwatch and a paper tally.

Week What you do Who owns it
1 and 2 Record a baseline without AI. Time 20 cars in each of three dayparts: your rush, a slow hour and late night. Tally drive-offs and remakes caused by order mistakes. The shift lead in each daypart
3 AI installed. Staff play guests in a car with the engine running. Test a modified combo, a sold-out item, a guest who asks for a person and a crew takeover halfway through an order. Every shift lead does the takeover once. Owner or general manager, with the vendor
4 AI live in the slow hour only. Keep the tally: orders finished with no staff help, orders staff finished, guests who asked for a person. Shift lead
5 AI live in all three dayparts. Time 20 cars per daypart again, the same way as weeks 1 and 2. Shift lead
6 Compare the numbers with your baseline and your written stop rule. Decide to keep, extend or remove. Owner

Avoid a menu change, a price rise or a new promotion during the six weeks. Each one moves order times by itself.

## What stop rule should you write before the first live car?

Agree on it with the vendor in writing, and set every number yourself from your baseline.

1. The AI comes off the lane if order time in the rush is worse than baseline by more than ____ seconds for ____ days in a row.
2. It comes off if staff have to finish more than ____ of every 10 orders in week 5.
3. It comes off after any failed crew takeover until the vendor fixes the cause.
4. Remakes from order mistakes stay at or below ____ a day.
5. If you stop, the vendor removes its hardware by ____ and you owe ____.

Some guests will not talk to a machine. In September 2026, [Burger King told an industry conference](https://www.restaurantbusinessonline.com/technology/burger-king-shifts-gears-drive-thru-ai) that guests in its pilots drove off because they did not want to talk to a bot, and that it was building an easier way to order from a person. At the same conference, Technomic said 23% of consumers find ordering from an AI drive-thru bot appealing and 46% find it unappealing. Keep the takeover test in every week of the trial, and make sure a guest who asks for a person gets one fast.

## Where does Maple's drive-thru unit fit?

The [Maple drive-thru unit](https://maple.inc/drive-thru) stands beside your existing speaker post with its own directional microphone and speaker, so nothing is rewired and headsets keep working. A screen on the unit shows the guest the cart and running total. It writes orders into the POS systems on the [integrations page](https://maple.inc/integrations), including Toast, Square, Clover, SkyTab (now Shift4 Dine) and Lightspeed, and a one-press kill switch puts the lane back to normal. It is in early access with a small number of restaurants, priced per unit, with no public price. Bring the questions and the trial plan above to that conversation too.

*Published by Maple, which sells phone ordering and an early-access drive-thru unit. This AI-assisted guide combines vendors' own pages and press releases, one trade report and Maple's published scope with an original question list and six-week trial plan. It does not rank vendors, report a Maple customer result, or claim that any vendor accepts or refuses single-store customers.*
