# How AI drive-thru ordering works, from speaker post to POS

How AI drive-thru ordering works from car arrival to POS ticket: the hardware, what the crew still does, where it fails, and what to ask a vendor.

An AI drive-thru puts software at the speaker post in place of a crew member's voice. A car pulls up, the system greets the driver, takes the order item by item, reads it back and sends it to the POS. The crew still makes the food, runs the window and takes over when the AI gets stuck.

The takeover matters as much as the AI. Trouble tends to come from a loud engine, a guest who wants a person, or an order the menu setup did not plan for, and each of those ends with a crew member on the headset. Below is one order from start to finish, the equipment it touches, and the questions to settle before you sign. For Maple's own lane product, see the [Maple drive-thru page](https://maple.inc/drive-thru).

## What happens from car arrival to POS ticket?

Step What happens What to check on your lane
  1. Car arrives A vehicle detector at the order point tells the system a car is there Which detector you have and whether the AI can read its signal
  2. Greeting The AI speaks through a speaker at the post and listens through a microphone Whether it uses your post's speaker and mic or brings its own
  3. Order The guest names items, sizes and changes; the AI asks for any missing choice Required choices, combos and modifiers match your POS menu
  4. Confirmation The AI reads the order back, and a screen may show the cart and total Guests can fix a mistake before they drive forward
  5. POS ticket The order is written into the POS and reaches the kitchen The ticket matches what the guest heard, including price
  6. Window Crew take payment and hand over the food The window team can see which orders came from the AI

PAR's description of its [G5 drive-thru system](https://info.partech.com/blog/pars-g5-communications-system-is-leading-the-pack-in-drive-thru-technology) lists induction loops, switches and cameras as ways to detect a car at the order point. Find out which one your lane uses before a vendor visit, since the AI needs to know when to start talking.

## What hardware does an AI drive-thru use?

Most lanes already have the pieces: a speaker post with a microphone, a menu board, a vehicle detector, a headset base station and headsets inside, a timer, and a POS. The AI adds software and a network link. What differs between vendors is how the AI reaches the guest.

- **Through the headset system.** HME says its [NEXEO Pro platform](https://www.hme.com/qsr/drive-thru-voice-ai-ordering/) is built to support the voice AI provider a restaurant chooses. It lets a crew member take over the order at any point and alerts the crew when the AI needs help.
- **Beside the post.** Some units stand next to the post with their own microphone and speaker, so the headset wiring stays as it is.

Maple's drive-thru unit is the second kind. It stands beside the existing post with its own directional microphone and speaker, and headsets keep working. It shows a live cart and total on its screen and writes the order into the POS; the [integrations page](https://maple.inc/integrations) lists the supported systems. It is in early access with a small number of restaurants and is priced per unit, with no public price.

## What do staff still do?

The crew cooks, takes payment, hands out food and handles anything the AI cannot finish. Someone also needs to listen in or watch alerts so a stuck order does not hold up the line.

Wendy's calls its FreshAi system an assistant for the crew. In a [December 2023 update](https://www.wendys.com/blog/drive-thru-innovation-wendys-freshai), it said 86% of pilot orders went through without a team member stepping in. That leaves roughly one order in seven that needed a person.

Plan staffing on that basis. Decide who owns the lane during each shift, how they hear or see a problem, and how fast they must respond. A takeover control nobody is watching does not help the guest at the speaker.

## Where does AI drive-thru ordering fail?

Problem What it sounds like What should happen
Noise Engine, wind, music or passengers talking over the driver The AI asks the guest to repeat or hands the order to the crew
Custom orders Several changes to one item, or a split combo Every change reaches the ticket or the crew takes over
Off-menu requests An item you do not sell, or last season's special The AI says it is unavailable and offers something you do sell
Out of stock A guest asks for an item that ran out an hour ago The AI tells the guest it is out and leaves it off the order
Guest wants a person "Can I talk to someone?" A crew member picks up the order quickly

Intouch Insight's [2025 drive-thru study with QSR Magazine](https://www.intouchinsight.com/press-releases/drive-thru-study-2025-press-release) added 120 AI-enabled orders at three chains. Those orders were accurate 83% of the time against an 87% average, and the study tied most misses to order customization. When staff stepped in to support the AI, accuracy rose to 95%.

Some guests will not talk to a bot at all. In September 2026, [Burger King told an industry conference](https://www.restaurantbusinessonline.com/technology/burger-king-shifts-gears-drive-thru-ai) that its pilot restaurants saw drive-offs from guests who did not want to talk to a bot. The chain said it was still testing voice AI in about 1,500 locations and building an easier way to order from a person.

## How have chains tested it so far?

Large chains have run tests for several years, with mixed results. Three examples show the range:

- **McDonald's** ended its test with IBM in more than 100 restaurants, with the system shut off by July 26, 2024, [Restaurant Business reported in June 2024](https://www.restaurantbusinessonline.com/technology/mcdonalds-ending-its-drive-thru-ai-test). The company said voice ordering would still be part of its future.
- **Taco Bell** had voice AI in more than 100 U.S. drive-thrus across 13 states when [Yum! Brands announced in July 2024](https://www.tacobell.com/newsroom/yum-brands-to-expand-voice-ai-technology) that it aimed for hundreds by the end of that year.
- **Wendy's** started FreshAi, built with Google Cloud, at four company restaurants in the Columbus, Ohio, area, according to its December 2023 update.

These chains had their own engineering teams and many stores. Use their results as a list of problems to plan for on your own lane.

## Is the drive-thru the right place to start?

If your phone rings through the rush and the lane is steady, phone ordering may be the easier first test. Our [phone ordering vs drive-thru guide](https://maple.inc/blog/phone-ordering-vs-drive-thru-voice-ai-2026) covers that choice. The rest of this page assumes you have decided the lane is the problem.

## What should you ask an AI drive-thru vendor?

1. Does the system connect through my headset base station or stand beside the post? What model and age of equipment does it need?
2. How does it know a car has arrived, and what happens if the detector misses one?
3. How does a crew member take over mid-order, and how long does it take? Show me on a live lane.
4. How does a guest ask for a person, and what do they hear while they wait?
5. Which POS systems does it write orders into, and does the ticket show every modifier and price?
6. How does it learn an item is out of stock, and who updates that during service?
7. Which languages does it take orders in, and can I hear a recording in each one?
8. What happens when the internet drops or the POS is offline?
9. Does it record guest audio? Where is it stored, for how long, and who can use it?
10. What will the trial cost, including hardware, install and support, and how do we end it if the results are poor?

Ask for answers in writing, and test the takeover and a customized order on your own lane before you judge the demo.
