What leaving Clover involves under its own FAQ, from the subscription to devices and data, plus Square, Toast, SpotOn, Lightspeed and others compared.

If you leave Clover, start with Square for printed prices and no contract, Toast for restaurant hardware and support in one quoted package, or SpotOn for a month-to-month plan priced per station. Before you choose, check what you still owe: a Clover.com subscription cannot be canceled, and Clover's FAQ says Clover devices bought or leased from other sellers cannot be used with other processors.

Clover does a lot well. Clover.com prints its restaurant bundles and a card rate of 2.3% + 10¢, and a subscription includes an equipment protection program. Our [Clover review](https://maple.inc/blog/clover-pos-review) covers the system, and [Toast vs Clover](https://maple.inc/blog/toast-vs-clover) and [Square vs Clover](https://maple.inc/blog/square-vs-clover) compare it head to head. This page covers the exit and lays the other options side by side.

## What does leaving Clover involve?

These steps come from Clover's own [pricing FAQ](https://www.clover.com/pricing), [general FAQ](https://www.clover.com/resources/faqs) and help center.

1. **Find who holds your contract.** Clover's FAQ says contract terms and any termination fees vary by provider: Clover Direct, a bank such as Citi, PNC or Wells Fargo, or another partner. Your monthly statement lists your direct support number.
2. **Read the subscription terms.** On Clover.com, subscriptions are "non-cancelable and ineligible for refunds." You can pay one off at any time, or break it to upgrade or buy out.
3. **Give notice before the term ends.** At the end you buy or return the equipment. If you choose neither, the subscription carries on at the same monthly charge. To stop, tell Clover at least 30 days before the end and say whether you will return or buy.
4. **Plan new devices.** The FAQ says Clover devices bought or leased from other sellers "cannot be used with other payment processors." Toast's pricing FAQ says its service runs only on approved Toast hardware.
5. **Export your menu and guests.** Clover's [inventory export](https://www.clover.com/en-US/help/export-an-inventory-spreadsheet) saves your items as an Excel file from Items, then Item List, then Options, then Export. Its [customer export](https://www.clover.com/en-US/help/export-customer-list) downloads a CSV from the dashboard; devices cannot export the full list.
6. **Close the account through support.** Clover's [account help](https://www.clover.com/en-US/help/cancel-clover-account) says to contact Clover support to close, pause or hold an account, with your merchant ID or tax ID ready.
7. **Return devices cleanly.** Clover's [return guide](https://www.clover.com/en-US/help/replace-return-clover-devices) asks you to sync all orders, uninstall apps with monthly fees and deactivate SIM cards first. Pack every cable and power supply to avoid charges for missing parts.

## Does leaving mid-term save money? A worked example

The figures are made up. A counter restaurant is in month 14 of a Clover.com quick-service Standard subscription at $185 a month. It takes $30,000 a month in tapped card sales across 1,500 payments at $20, and it weighs a move to Square Free with a Square Terminal.

Line, months 15 to 36 Stay on Clover Switch to Square Free now
  Clover subscription left Stay: 22 × $185 = $4,070 Switch: $4,070, still owed
  Card fees for 22 months Clover, 2.3% + 10¢: 22 × $840 = $18,480 Square Free, 2.6% + 15¢: 22 × $1,005 = $22,110
New hardware Stay hardware: none Square Terminal: $299
Total Stay total: $22,550 Switch total: $26,479

Because the subscription is owed either way, the switch in this example costs $3,929 more over the rest of the term. Clover.com's in-person rate is lower than Square Free's at any payment size, so the gap grows with your sales. Leaving early makes sense when the new system does a job you need now and that job is worth the gap. For a vendor that quotes its rate, put the quote into the same sum. Rates come from Clover's [quick-service pricing](https://www.clover.com/pricing/quick-service-restaurant) and Square's pricing and [hardware](https://squareup.com/us/en/hardware) pages.

If a bank or reseller sold you Clover, use the rates and exit fee on your own agreement. Clover's FAQ does not say whether a payoff is discounted, so ask for the payoff figure in writing.

## What should you ask a new POS vendor?

1. What is my card rate for tapped, typed-in and online cards, in writing, and can it change during the term?
2. How long is the term, and what do I owe if I leave in month 12?
3. Can you import my Clover item and customer files, and who does the work?
4. Which Clover apps do I pay for today, and does the new POS do those jobs, or will I need other apps?
5. Can you go live on the day my Clover term ends, so I do not pay for two systems?
6. Which kitchen printers, cash drawers and screens will I need to buy?

Test the new system with your own menu before you sign. Our [guide to choosing a restaurant POS](https://maple.inc/blog/best-pos-system-for-restaurants) has a demo script, and [what a restaurant POS costs](https://maple.inc/blog/restaurant-pos-cost) prices three-year totals.

## What about the tools connected to Clover?

List every tool that sends orders into Clover, such as online ordering, delivery apps and phone ordering, and check each one works with the new POS. Maple Pro's [integrations page](https://maple.inc/integrations) lists Clover, Toast, Square, SpotOn, Lightspeed and SkyTab (now Shift4 Dine). HungerRush is not on it. Test a phone order on the new POS before you move your number.
