How double drive-thru lanes work, why orders get mixed up at the merge, the headsets, timers and POS tags that help, and what chains have built.

A dual-lane drive-thru has two order points side by side, so two guests can order at once. In a common layout the lanes merge into one line before the windows, and the merge is where orders get handed to the wrong car. Before you add a lane, plan how the crew will match each order to its car, and who will take orders in the second lane at peak.

Most stores still run one lane. In Intouch Insight's 2025 drive-thru study, 79% of the drive-thrus visited had one complete lane, 20% had two and 1% had three, according to Intouch's [October 2025 notes on the study](https://www.intouchinsight.com/blog/qsr-drive-thru-customer-behavior).

## What layouts count as a double drive-thru?

Timer maker DTiQ names three layouts with two order points in its [guide to drive-thru types](https://www.dtiq.com/blog/drive-thru/types-of-drive-thrus). Chains also add lanes kept for app orders.

Layout How cars move What to plan for Start here if
Y-lane (side by side, then merge) Two order points; the lanes join into one line for payment and pickup Matching orders to cars after the merge You have room for a second order point and one set of windows
Dual lane Two complete lanes, each with its own order point, path and pickup window Twice the order points, windows and window equipment, and staff for both sides Your building has windows on both sides and staff for both
Tandem One lane with two order points and two pickup windows, one behind the other Two order takers and two pickup windows on one path You can staff two order points and two windows on one lane
Order-ahead lane App and delivery orders skip the speaker and go to pickup Signs, and where the order-ahead lane rejoins the main line A large share of your orders already come through an app

## Why do orders get mixed up at the merge?

Two order points send orders to the kitchen in one sequence, and the merge can put the cars in another. DTiQ says this makes it easy to hand a guest the wrong food.

An A&W franchisee in Baldwin, Wisconsin, who added a second lane in 2020, described the fixes his team used to [Restaurant Dive in November 2022](https://www.restaurantdive.com/news/AW-franchisee-boosted-drive-thru-sales-adding-lane/637237/). Staff asked for guests' names to confirm orders at the window, and used a timer and camera system to identify cars. When the store was quiet, guests queued in lane one without seeing lane two, so he added large stripes around the building reading "Drive-thru lane one" and "Drive-thru lane two," and flags reading "order here."

Ways to match each order to its car, from makers' and POS providers' own pages:

- **Tag the car in the POS.** Toast's [April 2026 Toast Drive-Thru release](https://pos.toasttab.com/news/toast-drive-thru-launch-2026) describes a POS drive-thru mode where staff enter a vehicle ID and a lane tag. A Taco Palenque manager quoted in the release says staff can note the make, model and color of each car.
- **Show the car next to the order.** DTiQ says its order accuracy product pairs a video image of each car with its order on a screen for the crew.
- **Show the order number with the car's wait.** HME says its [ZOOM Nitro timer](https://www.hme.com/qsr/zoom-nitro-drive-thru-timers/) can display each car's POS order number with its wait time, where the POS integration is available.
- **Read the car.** i3 International's [Velocity timer](https://www.i3international.com/solutions/velocity-drive-thru-timer/) lists license plate recognition and color identification, with support for single and Y-lane drive-thrus.

Without any of these, a written car description on the ticket ("blue pickup, lane 2") and a name check at the window need no new equipment.

## What equipment does a second lane need?

Part What changes with two lanes Example from a maker's own page
Headset base station A base that handles two order points, and headsets that can switch lanes Panasonic's 458 headset sheet lists a dual lane center module; crew switch lanes with a dedicated [S] button
Vehicle detectors and speaker posts One of each per order point Panasonic's sample dual lane system lists two vehicle detectors, two speaker and microphone sets and two loops, against one of each for a single lane
Timer Detection and reports that understand the merge or the tandem DTiQ lists single lanes and Y merges; HME's ZOOM Nitro has "tandem-specific detection logic"
Menu boards A board at each order point, with the same prices RBI said in 2020 that a typical lane has four digital screens and a double drive-thru seven, per Restaurant Business in October 2020
POS A lane tag on every drive-thru order Toast Drive-Thru's lane tagging, offered first to brands with 15 or more locations

Our guides to [headset systems](https://maple.inc/blog/drive-thru-headset-systems), [timers](https://maple.inc/blog/drive-thru-timer) and [menu boards](https://maple.inc/blog/drive-thru-menu-board) cover each part in more detail.

## What does the second order point cost to install?

This worked example uses the installation labor ranges The Howard Company, a drive-thru fixture maker, prints on its [installation pricing page](https://www.howardcompany.com/pricing/how-much-does-an-installation-cost). They cover labor only. Howard says equipment, foundation work and the final electrical hookup are quoted separately, and a new lane also needs paving and permits.

Work (labor only) Howard's printed range
Vehicle detector loop, saw cut $900 to $985
Headset system, dual lane $1,400 to $1,800
  Timer system $900 to $1,100
  Drive-thru menu board $3,000 to $5,000
Total labor for this example $6,200 to $8,885

Assumptions: one new loop and one new menu board for the second order point, a full dual lane headset install, and a timer reinstall to cover both lanes. For scale, the A&W franchisee told Restaurant Dive his second-lane project cost roughly $80,000 in 2020.

## How do you staff two lanes?

A second order point only helps if someone takes orders there at peak. The A&W franchisee first sent crew into the line with tablets, then moved that person inside on a headset, so they could make drinks or help with food between orders. His store had two or three people handling drive-thru orders, and he said the kitchen could handle about 10 cars in the stack.

A simple plan to start from:

- **Peak:** one order taker per lane, or one plus a tablet order taker in the line.
- **Quiet hours:** one order taker who switches lanes on the headset, with one lane coned off if needed.
- **Kitchen:** check that the make line can keep up with two lanes of orders before you pave the second one.

An AI order-taker is another way to cover a second speaker. Maple's [drive-thru unit](https://maple.inc/drive-thru) stands beside an existing speaker post, writes the order into the POS and is priced per unit; it is in early access with a small number of restaurants. Ask any AI vendor how it handles two lanes and the merge, and test it with the [pilot checklist](https://maple.inc/blog/ai-drive-thru-pilot-checklist).

## Should you add a second lane?

1. **Is the queue your bottleneck?** Time your peak hour with the worksheet in our [timer guide](https://maple.inc/blog/drive-thru-timer). A second order point helps only when cars wait to reach the speaker, so check where the line stalls first.
2. **Can the kitchen keep up?** Count the cars per hour you serve now and ask whether the make line can take more.
3. **Do you have the room?** DTiQ notes that a tandem can be harder than a Y-lane to fit on a tight lot, and that a full dual lane works well where the building has windows on both sides.
4. **Who takes orders in lane two?** Name the person for each peak shift.
5. **How will you match cars to orders?** Pick a method from the list above before opening day.
6. **What will it cost?** Get quotes with the same line items as the worked example, plus equipment, paving and permits.
