A dated list of fast-food chains that have said AI takes drive-thru orders, with the vendor, latest public status and source for each.

Taco Bell, Wendy's, Bojangles, White Castle, Checkers & Rally's, Carl's Jr., Hardee's, Taco John's, Panda Express and Dairy Queen have each said, or had a vendor say, that AI takes drive-thru orders at some of their restaurants. McDonald's is testing again after ending an IBM trial in 2024. Del Taco stopped. Burger King is making it easier to reach a person.

The table lists what each chain or its vendor announced, when, and the most recent public report we could check against a company release, a vendor release or a trade outlet. Plans change often, and the status column gives the latest public statement. We left out chains where we found no company or vendor statement, such as Jack in the Box and Starbucks.

## What pattern shows up across these chains?

Most chains start with company-owned stores, then offer the system to franchisees. Wendy's ran FreshAi in four Columbus restaurants before opening pilots to franchisees. Dairy Queen tested at corporate stores for a few months before its April 2026 franchise expansion.

A small group of vendors serves most of the list: Presto, Hi Auto, SoundHound, Omilia and Google. Chains also change partners. McDonald's moved from IBM to a platform built with Google.

Several brands have slowed down or narrowed use. Del Taco dropped its system in 2023. McDonald's ended the IBM test in 2024. In a [September 2025 Nation's Restaurant News report](https://www.nrn.com/restaurant-technology/taco-bell-is-adjusting-its-voice-ai-plans), Taco Bell's technology chief said busier restaurants may do better with a person taking orders. Burger King's technology vice president said in September 2026 that forcing AI as the only way to order "doesn't go well."

## How do chains measure whether it works?

Each company defines success its own way, so vendor figures do not compare directly.

Wendy's [measured pilot accuracy](https://www.wendys.com/blog/drive-thru-innovation-wendys-freshai) as the share of orders handled without a team member stepping in, and reported an 86% average.

Hi Auto [reports more than 93% completion and 96% accuracy](https://hi.auto/company/newsroom/hi-autos-ai-order-taker-surpasses-100-million-drive-thru-orders-per-year/) across nearly 1,000 stores, using its own definitions.

McDonald's said at its [September 2026 investor day](https://stockanalysis.com/stocks/mcd/transcripts/746101-investor-day-2026/) that Archy's accuracy is above 90%. The remarks did not say how it is measured.

Ask any vendor what counts as a completed order, who decides an order was accurate, and whether orders where staff stepped in are counted as failures.

## What should an independent or small-chain operator take from this?

1. **Keep a person one step away.** Burger King saw guests drive off rather than talk to a bot. Check how a guest asks for staff and how fast the crew can take over.
2. **Test silly and huge orders.** A prank order for 18,000 water cups at Taco Bell ended with an employee taking over, and the video drew tens of millions of views. Decide what your lane should do with an order no person would accept.
3. **Keep your own count.** Count orders completed with no staff help, orders staff finished, and guests who asked for a person. Compare them with a normal week.
4. **Check the POS path first.** At Taco John's, Presto built a direct link to the POS, Qu, so AI orders show up on kitchen screens. Confirm your POS is supported before you schedule a trial.
5. **Start with one lane and a stop rule.** Wendy's and Dairy Queen each tested in a few stores for months before expanding. Pick the hours to test and the result that would make you switch it off.

## Can a single restaurant get AI drive-thru ordering?

Most deals above are chain-wide contracts. In September 2026 Presto [joined the Toast Partner Ecosystem](https://presto.com/presto-announces-integration-with-toast-to-expand-voice-ai-for-drive-thru-automation/), saying the link lets it reach mid-market and emerging multi-location brands on Toast.

[Maple's drive-thru unit](https://maple.inc/drive-thru) is in early access with a small number of restaurants. It stands beside the existing speaker post, shows the guest a live cart and writes the order into the POS. It is priced per unit with no public price. To compare it with a phone-ordering trial first, use the [phone versus drive-thru guide](https://maple.inc/blog/phone-ordering-vs-drive-thru-voice-ai-2026).
