# Restaurant chatbots vs voice AI: which channel needs it

Where a text chatbot helps a restaurant, where voice AI fits better, and how to choose from your own count of calls, messages and lane orders.

Put a chatbot where guests already type to you and voice AI where they already talk. In many restaurants the phone carries the orders with modifiers and the questions that need a quick answer, so voice usually comes first. A website or Instagram chatbot earns its place when typed messages pile up unanswered. Count one week of both before you buy either.

A chatbot answers typed messages: a chat box on your website, text messages, Instagram and Facebook direct messages, or WhatsApp. Voice AI answers spoken requests: the phone line, the drive-thru speaker or a kiosk guests talk to. Some vendors sell both, so the choice is about channels first and vendors second.

## Where does a text chatbot help a restaurant?

**Your website.** A chat box can answer menu questions and, with some tools, take the order. Bite Buddy says its [restaurant chatbot](https://bitebuddy.ai/restaurant-chatbot) takes orders through a website chat widget or by text, sends them to the POS and books tables in the same chat. If your site already has online ordering, judge a chat box by the questions it can answer, such as "do you have a gluten-free bun?"

**Text messages.** Kea says its AI now [bridges voice and text](https://kea.ai/), so guests can order, ask questions or pay by either. Before any tool texts guests from an ordinary 10-digit number, check registration. Twilio's help center says businesses sending texts to US numbers from standard long-code numbers [must register for A2P 10DLC](https://help.twilio.com/articles/1260800720410-What-is-A2P-10DLC-). Ask the vendor who registers your brand and how long it takes.

**Instagram and Facebook messages.** Meta's free [Inbox automations](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/395965998733706) work across Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp accounts connected to Meta Business Suite. They include an instant reply, an away message, suggested questions with set answers, and replies for your location, contact details and hours. You write each reply once. If your messages repeat the same few questions, these may be all you need.

In June 2026 Meta made its [Meta Business Agent](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/06/meta-business-agent/) available to businesses of all sizes. Meta says it answers questions about your business, books appointments and lets you decide when a team member steps in. Getting started is free, and Meta says paid plans will follow. Meta's help page says turning it on pauses any away messages or instant replies you already set.

**Google.** Google ended Business Profile chat on [July 31, 2024](https://support.google.com/business/answer/14919056?hl=en). Today a verified profile can add a [text message number or WhatsApp link](https://support.google.com/business/answer/15013580?hl=en) as its chat option, in select regions. Messages from Google now reach whatever number you add, so any chatbot there is your texting or WhatsApp tool.

## Where does voice AI fit better?

**The phone.** Guests call when they are driving, when the order is large or has changes, and when they want an answer now. A phone agent answers, takes the order and passes some calls to staff. Square said in October 2025 that its [AI voice ordering](https://squareup.com/us/en/press/square-releases-food-beverage) takes phone orders with custom items and sends confirmed orders to the kitchen or POS. SoundHound says its [restaurant agents](https://www.soundhound.com/industries/restaurants) take orders over the phone, SMS, apps, drive-thru and in-car assistants.

Maple's [Voice plan](https://maple.inc/pricing) costs $150/month billed monthly or $85/month billed yearly and covers answering, FAQs and call transfer. Pro costs $350/month billed monthly or $220/month billed yearly and adds phone orders into a supported POS, reservations, payment over the phone and order confirmation texts.

**The drive-thru.** At a speaker post, voice is the only option. Presto joined the [Toast partner ecosystem](https://presto.com/presto-announces-integration-with-toast-to-expand-voice-ai-for-drive-thru-automation/) in September 2026 so lane orders flow into Toast. Maple's [drive-thru unit](https://maple.inc/drive-thru) stands beside the existing speaker post and has a one-press switch back to the crew. It is in early access with a small number of restaurants, priced per unit, with no public price. The [AI drive-thru guide](https://maple.inc/blog/ai-drive-thru) covers how lane ordering works.

**The counter.** A voice kiosk lets a guest speak the order and watch the cart build on screen. Maple's [kiosk](https://maple.inc/kiosk) works this way and is also in early access. The [voice kiosk guide](https://maple.inc/blog/ai-voice-kiosk) covers noise, modifiers and staff help.

## Which channel should you automate first?

For one normal week, count every request by channel: calls answered, calls missed (your phone provider's log shows these), website chats, texts, Instagram and Facebook messages, WhatsApp, and lane orders at the peak hour. Tag each as an order, a question, a booking, or a problem with an order. Note which ones waited more than 15 minutes for a reply. Then read your counts against this table.

What your week shows Start with Check first
Missed calls at the rush, many of them orders A phone agent that writes orders into your POS A test order with a required choice and a modifier matches the printed ticket
Calls are mostly hours, directions and "are you open" A phone answering plan, and correct hours on Google and your site Holiday hours and the transfer to staff
Direct messages repeat the same few questions Meta's free Inbox automations Every set answer matches your menu and hours today
Website chats and texts ask to place orders A chatbot that writes into your POS, or a reply with your ordering link Who sees a text order the POS rejects
Lane orders back up while one person holds the headset A drive-thru voice pilot at one lane How the crew takes the lane back
Bookings arrive by message and by phone One tool that writes to your reservation system from both A change and a cancellation on each channel
Complaints and problems with past orders Staff, with a clear handoff Who owns the reply, using the handoff checklist
Low counts everywhere Nothing new; set an away message That someone reads messages each day

If two rows fit, start with the one that holds more orders, because each missed order is a lost sale. The [voice ordering channel guide](https://maple.inc/blog/best-voice-ai-ordering-platforms) compares phone and drive-thru needs in more detail.

## How should you test a chatbot or voice agent before launch?

1. Pull ten real requests from your week for each channel you plan to automate. Use them as the test script.
2. Place a text order and a phone order for the same meal, each with a required choice, a modifier and a change before checkout. Compare both with the ticket that prints.
3. Ask an allergen question on each channel. Check the answer against your own allergen sheet, and decide which questions must go to a person.
4. Ask for a person on each channel. Time how long a staff member takes to reply, and note who sees the request.
5. Send a message and place a call after closing. Check what the guest hears or reads.
6. Check what the guest receives after ordering, and whether texting is registered and guests have agreed to receive texts.
7. Run it for two weeks. Count requests finished, requests handed to staff and requests not finished, per channel.

Before a phone trial, the [menu preparation worksheet](https://maple.inc/blog/prepare-menu-ai-phone-ordering) helps you list the items and modifiers the agent must handle.

## Can one vendor cover chat and voice?

Some can. Kea and SoundHound describe text and voice on their own sites, and Bite Buddy sells phone answering alongside its chatbot. Count how many menus you can keep current: each extra tool is one more place to mark an item sold out.

Maple sells voice products: phone answering and ordering today, with drive-thru and kiosk in early access. If your count shows the phone is where orders go unanswered, the [phone ordering page](https://maple.inc/product) sets out a trial from call to kitchen.
