Compare Toast and Square on plans, card rates, hardware, KDS, handhelds, offline mode and contracts, using each company's own pricing and terms pages.

Start with Square if you run a café, food truck or small counter-service spot and want every price in public before a sales call, with no locked-in contract. Start with Toast if you run a full-service or multi-station kitchen, want Toast's own restaurant hardware, and will sign a term agreement for a quoted card rate.

The biggest difference is how you buy. Square prints its plans, card rates and hardware prices, and you can sign up without talking to anyone. Toast prints its plan prices but quotes most card rates, and its merchant agreement sets a term with an early termination fee. Both sets of prices below are for the United States.

## How do Toast and Square price software and card processing?

Square's [pricing page](https://squareup.com/us/en/pricing) lists three plans and charges the Plus and Premium fee for each location you run. Card rates fall as you move up. Square also says you pay the same rate for Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.

- **Square Free:** $0/mo. per location. In person 2.6% + 15¢; online 3.3% + 30¢.
- **Square Plus:** $49/mo. per location. In person 2.5% + 15¢; online 2.9% + 30¢.
- **Square Premium:** $149/mo. per location. In person 2.4% + 15¢; online 2.9% + 30¢.
- **Every Square plan:** manual entry or card on file is 3.5% + 15¢, and cards issued outside the United States add 1.5%.

From those numbers you can work out when a paid Square plan earns back its fee on rates alone. Plus saves 0.1% on in-person cards and 0.4% on online cards, so its $49 fee is covered at $49,000 a month per location in in-person card sales, or $12,250 a month online, or a mix of the two. Premium costs $100 more than Plus and saves another 0.1% in person only, so it needs $100,000 a month in in-person card sales to cover the gap. Plus and Premium also add features Free lacks, such as the KDS app.

Toast's [pricing page](https://pos.toasttab.com/pricing) lists a Starter Kit starting at $0/month, Point of Sale starting at $69/month with "flat-rate processing," a Build Your Own plan with custom pricing, and a POS and payroll bundle for new restaurants starting at $69/month + $9 per employee/month. Its footnotes say the prices apply to new customers and single locations only, include the first hardware terminal subscription, and that more devices cost extra.

Toast's [payments page](https://pos.toasttab.com/products/payments) says its team will "create a rate for you based on your business." Its pricing page does not print a Visa, Mastercard or Discover rate, so get yours in writing. Toast's [starter kit footnotes](https://pos.toasttab.com/shop/bundles) do print American Express at 3.29% + 15¢ card-present and 3.89% + 15¢ card-not-present, and offer custom pricing above $500k a year in card sales. Square offers custom pricing above $250,000 a year.

## What does the hardware cost?

Square's [hardware page](https://squareup.com/us/en/hardware) prints each device: Square Register at $899 or $44/mo over 24 months, Square Handheld at $399 or $37/mo over 12 months, Square Terminal at $299 or $27/mo over 12 months, and Square Stand or Square Kiosk at $149 or $14/mo over 12 months. The Reader for contactless and chip is $59. Square's installment plans carry a 15% APR and are not offered in Alabama, Delaware, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire or Tennessee. Square's restaurant FAQ adds that you may be able to reuse iPads, kitchen printers, receipt printers, cash drawers and routers.

Toast does not print device prices on its pricing page. It says upfront costs are hardware and implementation, which depend on your setup, and that you must use Toast-approved hardware. For payment, Toast lists paying upfront, 0% interest financing by application, and [Toast Easy Pay](https://pos.toasttab.com/pricing-payment-options), a 180-day lease in the United States. Under Easy Pay, Toast withholds 0.75% of daily card sales once you are live, or 1.75% before you go live, and collects any balance by ACH at the end.

## How do the restaurant features compare?

- **Kitchen display:** Toast sells its own [KDS hardware](https://pos.toasttab.com/hardware/kitchen-display-system) that connects to Toast POS. Square's KDS app is not available on Square Free and costs $30/mo. per device on Plus or $20/mo. per device on Premium.
- **Online ordering:** Toast's [online ordering page](https://pos.toasttab.com/products/online-ordering) says "No commissions" and charges a flat fee per delivery order. Square's [restaurant FAQ](https://squareup.com/us/en/point-of-sale/restaurants) describes an online ordering page with no monthly fees or commissions.
- **Handhelds:** Toast lists the [Toast Go 3](https://pos.toasttab.com/hardware/toast-go) with an IP65 rating, a 5-foot drop rating and 4G cellular on applicable models. The [Square Handheld](https://squareup.com/us/en/hardware/handheld) is IP54-rated and needs Wi-Fi with high-speed internet.
- **Offline mode:** Toast says offline mode lets you keep placing orders, printing tickets and receipts, and taking cards until the connection returns. Square processes offline card payments when the device reconnects, but declines them if it does not reconnect within 24 hours, and you carry the risk of any declined or disputed offline payment.
- **Kiosks:** Square's Kiosk app costs $50/mo. per device on Plus or $30/mo. per device on Premium. Toast sells a self-ordering kiosk; its price is not on the pricing page.
- **Support:** Toast includes 24/7 support with every software subscription. Square gives 24/7 phone support on Premium, weekday daytime phone support on Plus, and the same on Free for the first 90 days.

## What contract do you sign?

Toast's [merchant agreement](https://pos.toasttab.com/merchant-agreement) starts an initial term set in your order, then renews unless either side gives at least 30 days' notice before the term ends. If you leave early, you owe an early termination fee equal to the software fees left in the term, or, on Pay-as-you-Go, $150 for each month left. Toast can change card processing rates during the term with 30 days' written notice. Toast's [Pay-as-you-Go footnote](https://pos.toasttab.com/compare/toast-vs-square) adds a platform fee on each transaction and a 2 year agreement.

Square's pricing page says there are no locked-in contracts and you can cancel or switch anytime. Plus and Premium each start with a free 30-day trial. Hardware installment plans are credit sales issued by Block, Inc. and need credit approval.

## Which integrations should you check?

Both systems run a partner marketplace: Toast's [partner directory](https://pos.toasttab.com/partners/directory) and the [Square App Marketplace](https://squareup.com/us/en/app-marketplace). Before you choose, search each one for your payroll, accounting, reservation and delivery tools, and ask each partner what the connection moves (menus, orders, payments or only sales totals).

If you plan to take phone orders with AI, Maple Pro sends orders into both systems. See the [Toast](https://maple.inc/integrations/toast) and [Square](https://maple.inc/integrations/square) integration pages for what to test.

*Published by Maple. This AI-assisted comparison combines Toast's and Square's own US pricing, hardware, product and agreement pages with an original break-even calculation for Square's plans. It does not include a quote from either company, and it does not claim anyone tested either system.*
