A dated history of Wendy's FreshAI drive-thru ordering with Google Cloud, from the chain's own releases, blog and earnings calls, plus lessons for operators.

Wendy's FreshAI is a voice system that takes drive-thru orders, built with Google Cloud. Wendy's planned its first pilot for June 2023 in one Columbus, Ohio restaurant and said 86% of pilot orders went through with no crew help. It began testing Spanish in 2024. In February 2025 it said FreshAI was in more than 100 restaurants, with 500 to 600 planned that year.

Wendy's has written the name both FreshAI and FreshAi. Everything below comes from Wendy's own releases, its blog and its earnings calls, with one news report for the Spanish pilot. We have not visited a FreshAI lane or tested the system.

## What has Wendy's said about FreshAI, and when?

    Date What Wendy's said Source
May 2023 Announced FreshAI with Google Cloud. The first pilot was planned for June at a company-operated restaurant near Columbus. Wendy's said 75 to 80 percent of its customers choose the drive-thru, and that the two companies had worked together since 2021. Wendy's and Google Cloud release
June 2023 Said FreshAI pairs the voice with a display of the order on a digital menu board, and gave an example: a guest who asks for a large chocolate milkshake gets a large chocolate Frosty. Wendy's blog, June 2023
December 2023 FreshAI was live in four company restaurants in Columbus. Franchisees could pilot it in 2024. Wendy's said it was "resisting the urge to deploy widely and too quickly." Wendy's blog, December 2023
February 2024 CEO Kirk Tanner said FreshAI was in "several restaurants" with "ongoing improvement in speed and accuracy." Q4 2023 call transcript
August 2024 Began a Spanish pilot in the drive-thrus of 28 company-operated restaurants in Florida and Ohio. A guest says "Spanish" or "Español" to switch. CBS News, citing Wendy's release
November 2024 Tanner said Wendy's would broaden FreshAI in 2025 across company and franchise restaurants: "you go slow to go fast." Q3 2024 call transcript
February 2025 Wendy's deployed voice AI ordering at nearly 100 locations in 2024. Tanner said it was now in more than 100 and would reach 500 to 600 during 2025. Q4 2024 call transcript
May 2025 Said the pilot that began in two states in 2024 "has expanded nationwide," that FreshAI handles "tens of thousands of orders daily," and that more languages will follow Spanish. The assistant's voice is called Wendy. Wendy's blog, May 2025
February 2026 Credited the sales lead of U.S. company-operated restaurants in part to "the continued rollout of digital menu boards and FreshAI automated ordering technology." No store count given. Q4 2025 call transcript

## How does FreshAI work?

The May 2023 release describes Google's large language models loaded with Wendy's menu data, business rules and "conversation guardrails," connected to the restaurant's hardware and its POS. The pilot used Google's Vertex AI to hold the conversation, handle made-to-order requests and answer common questions.

Wendy's said in December 2023 that it chose generative AI because rule-based chatbots take years to build and are hard to change. It said there are more than 200 billion ways to order a Dave's Double, which gives a sense of the menu problem any drive-thru system has to solve.

## How did Wendy's measure the pilot?

Wendy's defined pilot accuracy as [the share of orders FreshAI handled without a team member stepping in](https://www.wendys.com/blog/drive-thru-innovation-wendys-freshai), and reported an 86% average. That is closer to what other vendors call a completion rate. The definition does not say how Wendy's checked that each finished order was right.

When an analyst asked in November 2024 for labor hours saved and the accuracy rate, Tanner said "we're still developing this" and did not give a figure. In February 2025 he said the system "drives sales" and that "the accuracy definitely is improving."

The same February 2025 call credited an 80-basis-point gain in company restaurant margin to its digital and technology work as a whole, including digital sales growth, digital menu boards at more than 300 locations and AI order taking at nearly 100. Wendy's did not split out the share due to FreshAI.

## How widely is FreshAI used now?

The latest store count we found from Wendy's is more than 100 restaurants, given in February 2025, with a target of 500 to 600 by the end of that year. The May 2025 blog gave daily order volume, and the February 2026 call spoke of a "continued rollout" without a count.

FreshAI did not come up in the June 2026 or August 2026 earnings calls. In August, CEO Bob Wright named the drive-thru as an area where Wendy's must "better manage peak hour traffic" and staff restaurants for demand. Treat any figure for today's FreshAI footprint as unconfirmed until Wendy's states one.

## What can a restaurant operator take from Wendy's FreshAI?

1. **Write your own definition first.** Wendy's counted orders finished with no crew help. Decide whether you will count that, orders that reached the kitchen correct, or both, and ask any vendor to report the same way.
2. **Put the order on a screen.** Wendy's described FreshAI with an order display on the menu board from the start. A guest who sees each item can fix a mistake before the window.
3. **Start small and stay small for a while.** Wendy's went from one planned pilot store in 2023 to four by December and more than 100 by early 2025. For one location, that means one lane, set hours and a date to decide.
4. **Test each language on its own.** Wendy's ran Spanish as a separate pilot in 28 restaurants. If your guests order in another language, test how they switch and what the crew sees.
5. **Change one thing at a time.** Wendy's reported its margin gain from AI, menu boards and digital sales together. If you add a menu board and AI in the same month, you will not know which one moved your numbers.
6. **Check the POS link early.** FreshAI was built to connect with Wendy's own restaurant hardware and POS. Confirm your POS version is supported before you book a trial.

If you want to try AI at your own lane, [Maple's drive-thru unit](https://maple.inc/drive-thru) is in early access with a small number of restaurants. It stands beside the existing speaker post, shows the guest a live cart on its screen, and writes the order into the POS. One press returns the lane to the crew. It is priced per unit, with no public price.
