Clover online ordering: fees, setup and phone orders

What Clover Online Ordering does, what it costs per order, the five setup steps from Clover's help center, and what to test before guests order.
Clover Online Ordering builds a free ordering page for a Clover restaurant, lists it in the Clover app, and prints each order at your Clover device. Clover charges no subscription or setup fee for it. You pay the card-not-present rate on every online order, which is 3.5% + 10¢ on the restaurant plans sold on Clover.com.
That per-order rate is the number to watch. It sits above the in-person rate, and a bank or reseller that sold you Clover may charge a different one. Setup happens in the Clover dashboard in five steps, and most of the work is the menu and the printer.
What does Clover Online Ordering do?
Clover's online ordering page says Clover builds an ordering page that you can link from your website or use on its own, and that the page also appears in the Clover app. It syncs with your in-store menu, so you manage one menu. Guests can order takeout, curbside pickup, delivery or dine-in, and the dashboard also sets up Order with Google.
Clover's restaurant online ordering page adds scheduled orders, curbside vehicle details, Scan to Order and Scan to Pay QR codes for tables, and printing by food type. Both pages say you need a Station Solo, Station Duo, Mini or Flex connected to a printer, and that online ordering is not available on the Payments Plus and Register Lite software plans. Clover's help center lists it on the Restaurant Growth plan.
What does Clover Online Ordering cost?
| Charge | What Clover prints |
|---|---|
| Ordering page and app listing | "No subscription or setup fees" |
| Software plan | Restaurant Growth, the plan listed in all six Clover.com restaurant bundles |
| Card paid online | Card information typed in: 3.5% + 10¢ on Clover.com restaurant bundles |
| Same card at the counter, for comparison | Card tapped, swiped or inserted: 2.3% + 10¢ |
| Delivery through DoorDash Drive | "Delivery fees may apply to online orders with delivery"; Clover's ordering pages print no delivery fee |
Clover's pricing FAQ says the higher "typed-in" fee applies when the card is not present, "like an online sale or phone order." Clover's sign-up guide says online orders are card-not-present transactions and that the fee goes to the company you bought Clover from. The rates above come from the full-service and quick-service pricing pages, which say those prices are only available on Clover.com. Our Clover POS pricing guide has the bundle prices and contract terms.
A worked example, with made-up volume: 400 online orders a month at a $30 average is $12,000 in sales. At 3.5% + 10¢, card fees come to $460. The same sales paid in person at 2.3% + 10¢ would cost $316. Online ordering adds $144 a month in card fees here, with no software charge.
How do you set up Clover Online Ordering?
Clover's preparation guide asks for three things first: an up-to-date item list with images and descriptions, age-restricted items flagged, and complete business hours. Then the five steps in Clover's help center:
- Sign up. In the dashboard, go to Ordering tools, then Online ordering, then My website. Choose a new Clover website or link your existing one, pick in-store pickup, curbside or local delivery through DoorDash Drive, choose a subdomain and publish.
- Business information. Enter the online business name, address and online ordering phone number. These are separate from your receipts and billing details.
- Operational details. Set online hours, timezone and prep time. If you leave hours blank, Clover sets 11 AM to 8 PM. A long prep time can push pickup times outside your online hours.
- Online menu. Clover builds the online menu from your inventory. Rename or hide items, and add descriptions and photos of at least 1,600 by 1,200 pixels. Items with a variable price and items sold by weight are not supported.
- Printing. Clover picks a remote firing device in the order Station, Mini, Flex. Choose expo receipts, printing by item label, or both.
What should you test before you share the link?
- Order one item from each category with modifiers. Check that each item prints at the right station and that renamed items still match what the kitchen expects.
- Add a note to an item. Clover has a dashboard setting that controls whether order notes print on order receipts.
- Check which device is the remote firing device. With two devices of the same type, Clover picks the one that took the last order.
- Turn the remote firing device off and place an order. Clover says you then get no notice of online orders.
- Unplug the printer and place an order. Clover says the order shows in the Orders app and the owner gets an email.
- Try to order after hours and schedule an order for a later day. Our holiday hours checklist covers the other places hours live.
- Pause ordering for a set time and confirm it resumes. Clover's ordering options guide covers pausing, stopping and choosing fulfillment methods.
- Cancel a test order from the Orders section of the dashboard, and decide who handles changes guests ask for.
What happens to phone orders?
Step 2 asks for an online ordering phone number. Guests who want to ask a question, change an order or order by voice call the restaurant, and staff key those orders into Clover as before. Under the pricing FAQ, a card read out over the phone and typed in also counts as card-not-present, so on Clover.com rates it costs the same 3.5% + 10¢ as an online order.
If calls at the rush are the problem, Maple Pro answers the phone and writes orders into Clover. The Maple Clover integration page lists what to test.
What if you bought Clover from a bank or reseller?
Clover's pricing FAQ says banks such as Citi, PNC and Wells Fargo sell Clover, along with many other financial institutions, and that contract terms and termination fees can vary by provider. Your card-not-present rate comes from your own agreement, so find it on your statement or ask your provider before you use the example above.
