Clover POS review for restaurants
By Maple Team · Published
What Clover does well for restaurants, what it costs, the contract you sign and what to test, from Clover's own pages, help center and FAQ.
Put Clover on your shortlist if you want printed restaurant bundles, one card rate for every brand, and devices from a phone reader to a 24-inch kitchen screen. Before you sign, know two things: a Clover.com subscription runs 36 months and cannot be canceled, and a bank or reseller that sells you Clover sets its own rates and exit fees.
Below: what Clover says its restaurant system does, what each setup costs on Clover.com, the terms you agree to, and a test list for your demo. Prices are for the United States.

What does Clover do well for restaurants?
Clover's full-service restaurant page lists digital floor plans, bill splitting, card pre-authorization for tabs, and tableside ordering and firing. It also says all cards, "including AMEX and rewards cards," get the same rates. On the full-service pricing page, tableside ordering and firing come only with the Standard and Advanced bundles.
For counters, the quick-service pricing page includes QR-code ordering, no-fee online ordering, remote order firing and sold-out marking on all three bundles. Line busting with a Flex comes only on Advanced.
The Kitchen Display System page offers two screen sizes, item-level routing, prep time reporting and runner tickets printed on any network printer.
Clover's help article on offline payments says devices can take card payments offline for up to 7 days. The setting is on by default for Station, Station 2, Mini, Flex and Mobile. You can cap each offline payment and the total per device. You carry the risk of a decline when the device comes back online, and offline mode does not work for EBT or gift cards.
Clover's pricing FAQ says support runs 24/7 and points to hundreds of apps in the Clover App Market. It also says banks such as Citi, PNC and Wells Fargo sell Clover, as do Restaurant Depot and Sam's Club.
What does Clover cost?
On all six restaurant bundles, Clover.com prints 2.3% + 10¢ for a card tapped, swiped or inserted, and 3.5% + 10¢ for a card typed in. Rapid Deposit, which pays out within minutes of a sale, costs a 1.75% fee. Our Clover POS pricing guide lists every bundle and prices a sample month.
Smaller setups carry higher rates. Clover's Clover Go pricing page prints 2.6% + 10¢ in person on Starter and 2.5% + 10¢ on Essentials. It also marks item and order tools (creating items, tracking stock and itemized orders) as included on Essentials and not on Starter. The Flex pricing page prints 2.6% + 10¢ on its Starter plan.
Phone orders paid by a card read out over the phone count as typed in. Clover's FAQ gives "an online sale or phone order" as its example of a card not present.
What contract do you sign?
Clover's pricing FAQ sets these terms for buying on Clover.com:
- No cancellation: subscriptions are "non-cancelable and ineligible for refunds." You can pay one off at any time, or break it to upgrade or buy out.
- First bill: you have 30 to 60 days before the first payment is due.
- End of term: you buy or return the equipment. If you do neither, the subscription continues at the same monthly charge. To stop, tell Clover at least 30 days before the term ends.
- Warranty: a subscription includes the Equipment Protection Program, which covers accidental damage, theft and loss. It is not offered in New York or Oregon, where an extended warranty applies. Bought hardware gets a one-year limited warranty.
- Exit fees: the FAQ says contract terms and termination fees "can vary based on your service provider," whether Clover Direct or a partner bank.
- Locked devices: devices bought or leased from other sellers "cannot be used with other payment processors."
Clover's current $450 statement credit, described in the footnote on its Flex page, needs a 3-year contract, credit approval by January 31, 2027, and $10,000 or more in card transactions within the first four billing cycles. The offer ends December 31, 2026.
What should you test before you sign?
- Ask who your contract is with and who processes your cards: Clover Direct, a bank or a reseller. Get the rates and the exit fee from that seller in writing.
- Open a tab with a card pre-auth on the Station, add a round from the Flex, then split the check by seat.
- Fire a course from the Flex and watch where each item lands on the kitchen screen.
- Send an online order and a QR order. Check each reaches the kitchen screen with its modifiers.
- Mark an item sold out and check it drops off online ordering.
- Turn off the internet. Take a card payment under and over your offline limit, then reconnect and check both.
- Take a typed-in card and a tapped card, then find each fee in the report.
- List every App Market app you need and ask the monthly fee for each.
If you take phone orders, check how they reach the POS. Maple Pro lists Clover among its supported POS systems, and the Clover integration page lists what to test with your own menu.
