Revel POS review for restaurants
By Maple Team · Published
What Revel's iPad POS does, from its own help center: devices, kitchen screens, offline mode, online ordering, reports and multi-location tools.
Shortlist Revel if you run a quick-service or table-service restaurant on iPads and want kitchen screens, a kiosk, online ordering and delivery dispatch from one company. Know two things first. Shift4 has owned Revel since June 2024, and Revel prints no plan price, so every cost comes from a quote.
Shift4's June 14, 2024 release says it completed the purchase and that Revel had over 18,000 merchant locations. Revel's own website now forwards to Shift4's food and beverage page, so the product detail below comes from the Revel help center, which carries articles updated as recently as May 2026, and from Revel's API documentation. Shift4 also sells its own restaurant POS, which it renamed from SkyTab to Shift4 Dine in May 2026; our SkyTab review covers it.
| Revel product | What the help center says it does | Start here if |
|---|---|---|
| Revel POS | An iPad app for counter and table service; the table-service guide covers bar tabs, split checks, seats and courses | You want iPads at the counter or at the table |
| Kitchen Display System | Kitchen screens on Android or iPad, with multi-station kitchen flow, priority orders and a production count | You want to replace kitchen printers |
| Kiosk XT | A self-order screen you brand, with eat-in or take-out, categories and suggested tips | Guests order at the counter and you want a second queue |
| Online Ordering XT | A branded, mobile-friendly ordering site that sends orders to the POS and kitchen screens | You want your own ordering link |
| Delivery XT | A dispatch app for managers, a driver app and live tracking for guests | You run your own drivers |
| Enterprise Management System (EMS) | Pushes menu, price and setting changes to chosen locations and locks settings for franchisees; a paid add-on | You run several locations or franchise |
| Revel Advantage | Revel's own card processing, set up inside the POS | You want one company for the POS and card payments |
Which devices does Revel run on?
The register is an iPad. Revel's iPad compatibility article says the app supports iPadOS 17, 18 and 26, and that the oldest supported models are the 6th-generation iPad (2018) and the 2nd-generation iPad Pro (2017). Revel supports the three newest iPadOS versions and the two newest app builds, so an older iPad will drop off the list over time. Budget for replacements.
The supported hardware list names Epson and Star printers, Zebra and Dymo label printers, scales, scanners, Meraki networking, iPort stands and cases, a caller ID box, and a MicroTouch kitchen screen with a 20-key bump bar. In the United States, card readers are Ingenico devices such as the Lane 3000, Lane 3600 and Link 2500. Revel's payments overview says you can also bring First Data, Heartland, TSYS, Worldpay, Chase Paymentech or Elavon through a supported gateway.
How do Revel's kitchen screens work?
Revel runs its KDS app on supported Android screens and on iPads. The help center describes four tools a kitchen manager will use:
- Kitchen flow: an item moves from one screen to the next, for example from the cook on the main dish to the cook on the sides, with a third screen as an expo view. It needs at least two kitchen iPads, according to the kitchen flow guide.
- Priority: staff can flag an item or a whole order as a priority from the POS, per the prioritization guide.
- Production view: a running count of each product, or tagged products and modifiers, beside the order queue, per the production view guide.
- Order Ready XT: a pickup board on an Android TV showing up to 16 preparing and 16 ready orders. The Order Ready guide says it needs a paid subscription.
For how kitchen screens compare across vendors, see our kitchen display system guide.
What keeps working when the internet drops?
Revel's outage guide splits failures by cause. Its lists, shortened:
| What fails | Still works | Stops |
|---|---|---|
| Your internet | Taking and closing orders, cash, kitchen and receipt printers on Ethernet or Bluetooth; card payments in offline mode, if you turned it on | New online orders reaching the POS (they arrive once it reconnects), loyalty and gift cards, end of day, house accounts, typed-in card or debit payments, past orders |
| Revel's servers | Orders, cash, card payments, batching, printers, kitchen and customer screens | Management Console, Revel loyalty and gift cards, end of day, house accounts, inventory on the POS |
| Your card processor | Orders and cash; offline card payments; online orders set to pay at pickup | Batching, online payments, debit and typed-in cards |
| Power | Orders and cash until the iPad battery runs out | Printers, cash drawers, scanners and anything else without a battery |
The internet-outage list names printers and says nothing about kitchen screens, so unplug the router during your demo and watch the KDS. Offline card payments carry risk. Revel's offline mode article says the POS cannot check funds, expiry or fraud while offline, so some cards may decline later when the guest has left. You set a cap for one offline payment and for the total held, and debit cards cannot be taken offline. Our POS offline mode guide sets these rules beside other systems.
How does Revel handle online orders and delivery?
Online Ordering XT gives you a branded site at your Revel name plus ".revelup.online", per the setup guide. The Online Ordering XT guide lists future orders, delivery limits and estimated times, order notes, service fees and address checks, with orders sent to the POS and kitchen screens. The online ordering FAQ adds details worth knowing:
- Guests can check out without an account.
- An item whose stock hits zero shows as "Unavailable" online.
- Delivery as an order type needs Revel's Delivery Management.
- There is one prep time setting, so catering orders cannot get a longer one.
- Existing customer discounts do not apply online.
For marketplaces, Revel lists a direct DoorDash Marketplace integration, which uses DoorDash's drivers only, and an Uber Eats add-on. For your own drivers, Delivery XT adds a dispatch app that runs only on an iPad, a driver app and live tracking for guests.
What reports does Revel give you?
The reports section of the help center has about 45 articles, with guides to reports including Sales Summary, Hourly Sales, Product Mix, Labor, Tip Share and Ingredient Inventory Summary. Revel can email reports on a schedule as CSV, Excel or PDF files, daily, weekly or monthly.
Plan for history. Revel's data access article says orders, payments and other reporting data stay open for one year, which in practice means the last 13 months plus the current one. Older data needs a paid plan or your own exports, and renewing your contract does not reset that clock. Export last year's reports before you need them for taxes or a sale.
How does Revel handle more than one location?
EMS lets a head office push changes to all locations or to a group, and lock settings so franchisees cannot edit them. The establishment hierarchy guide describes divisions for regions and groups for menus or pricing, and the EMS introduction says it is a paid subscription. One snag: the merchant statements guide says card statements in the console cover single stores only, and EMS users get a link to a separate payments portal.
For outside systems, Revel publishes an API covering orders, products, customers, inventory, employees, scheduling, tables, tax and web orders. Its operations FAQ says Revel sends API keys only to the partner, so ask each partner to request them.
What does Revel not print?
Revel's help center gives no price for the POS subscription, hardware, kitchen screens, kiosk or online ordering, and its Revel Advantage page says each merchant gets a card-rate offer tailored to its business. None of these help pages gives a contract length either. Get each of these on the written quote.
What should you test in a Revel demo?
- Check the model of every iPad you own against Revel's compatibility list.
- Unplug the internet. Take an order, check the kitchen screen, print a ticket and take a card. Then plug it back in and watch the offline payments go through.
- Place an online order with a modifier and a note, then mark the item out of stock and reload the site.
- Ask how many years of reports your price includes and what a longer data plan costs.
- If you have several locations, change one price at all of them from the head-office view.
- Ask for the Revel customer agreement and read the term, renewal and cancellation clauses.
If phone orders matter to you, check before you commit. Maple Pro takes phone orders into the POS systems on Maple's integrations page, and Revel is not on that list, so ask any phone-ordering vendor to show you an order landing in Revel.
