Square online ordering: fees, setup and phone orders

By Maple Team · Published

Square's online ordering profile for restaurants: what it costs on each plan, courier fees, setup steps from Square's help center, and what to test first.

Square's online ordering profile is a free ordering page that runs off your Square POS menu. It works on every Square plan with no extra monthly fee. You pay Square's online card fee on each order: 3.3% + 30¢ on Square Free, or 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium. Delivery through Square's courier partners adds a fee per trip, paid by you or the guest.

Square describes the profile as working like a custom app, with its own link and QR code. Guests pay with Cash App, Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card, and orders print in your kitchen or show on Square KDS with your counter orders. Below are the fees as Square prints them, the setup steps from Square's help center and a test plan for your first week.

What does Square online ordering cost?

Square's online ordering page says you can launch a profile with any Square plan. For pickup orders, Square lists two charges: your plan fee and the online card fee.

Square FreeFree plan: $0/mo.Free online rate: 3.3% + 30¢Free in-person rate: 2.6% + 15¢

Square PremiumPremium plan: $149/mo., with a free 30-day trialPremium online rate: 2.9% + 30¢Premium in-person rate: 2.4% + 15¢

Square says a business processing over $250,000 a year can ask its team about custom pricing. For the full list of Square fees, hardware and add-ons, see our Square POS pricing guide.

Is Square Plus worth it for online orders?

Plus charges 0.4 percentage points less on online cards and 0.1 point less in person. On online sales alone, the lower rate saves $49 a month at $12,250 in online card sales, enough to pay the plan fee. A shop with $8,000 a month online and $17,000 in person also breaks even: $32 saved online plus $17 in person.

Plus also adds restaurant features, which our pricing guide lists. Treat these sums as one input to the choice.

What does delivery cost?

You can deliver with your own drivers or with Square's on-demand couriers. For on-demand orders, Square's On-Demand Delivery Pricing Policy lists the courier's fee. Square also charges its normal processing fee on the order.

So a 7-mile DoorDash delivery costs $8.99 outside California and New York City ($6.99 + 2 × $1), or $10.99 in California ($8.99 + 2 × $1).

Square's delivery setup guide lets you pick the courier for each location: DoorDash for every order, or Best Available, which uses Nash to choose a local courier by cost and reliability. For on-demand delivery you choose whether the customer pays the full delivery fee or you do. You can also add a service fee on top, which you keep minus processing.

With your own drivers, you draw delivery areas by postal code or radius and set the fee: free, a flat fee, free over a minimum, or by distance. You can send orders outside your area to Square's couriers, and split that courier fee with the guest.

How do you set up the profile?

These steps follow Square's profile setup guide. Only the account owner can create the profile, and profiles are only for food and beverage sellers.

  1. Build your menu first. Square says the menu syncs from your POS, and you can also import one from a PDF or a delivery marketplace.
  2. In Square Dashboard, go to Channels > Online ordering. If your location has a valid address, pickup is set up for you.
  3. Check that each menu is assigned to the profile and has items available for online ordering. Use menu hours for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  4. Add your logo, brand color, profile name and Cashtag. The Cashtag sets your profile link, and Square limits you to two changes.
  5. Set checkout: tipping, customer notes, extra payment checks for suspicious cards, taxes, service charges and store policies on refunds and prep time.
  6. Set pickup: prep time, curbside pickup, a cut-off time, and a cap on orders per 15-minute window. You can also cap large orders at up to 100 items or a dollar amount.
  7. Click Enable ordering, then share the link or QR code on your website, social pages and counter.
  8. Optional: connect Google in Square Dashboard and turn on Order with Google, so guests can order from Search and Maps. Google requires a physical location.

What should you test before you share the link?

  1. Place a pickup order with a required modifier and a note. Check the kitchen ticket matches what you ordered.
  2. Check when tickets print. Square lets you print when the order is placed or based on pickup time; pick the one your line can work with.
  3. Order an item outside its menu hours and confirm the profile blocks it.
  4. Place a delivery order to an address near the edge of your area. Check the fee the guest sees and who pays the courier.
  5. Turn on the 15-minute order cap and see what a guest sees when the window is full.
  6. Refund a test order and check it clears in Square Dashboard.
  7. Open your Google listing and check the order button goes to your profile.

Where do phone orders fit?

The profile takes web orders. Guests who call still reach whoever answers the phone. Square prices a card typed in over the phone differently from an online payment, and our Square pricing guide compares the two rates by order size.

If you want phone orders in Square too, Maple Pro takes phone orders into Square. The Maple and Square page lists what to test with your own menu, and Maple's pricing shows the plans. For a wider look at online ordering vendors and what each charges, see our Owner.com alternatives guide.

Published by Maple. This AI-assisted guide combines Square's own online ordering page, delivery pricing policy and help-center articles with original break-even sums and a test checklist. It does not report hands-on testing of Square Online or a quote from Square, and Square can change its fees, so confirm them in Square Dashboard.
