Toast POS pricing and fees for restaurants
By Maple Team · Published
Toast's printed plans, card fees, hardware payment options and contract terms, with a worked monthly cost and how to read a Toast processing statement.
Toast prints three plan prices: a Starter Kit starting at $0/month, Point of Sale starting at $69/month, and Build Your Own at custom pricing. It does not print its Visa, Mastercard or Discover card rate or its device prices, so most of your monthly bill comes from a quote. Read the merchant agreement before you sign: it sets the term, renewal and exit fee.
Below are the fees Toast prints on its own pages, a sample month priced out, and how to check your statement. For a side-by-side with Square, see Toast vs Square.
What does Toast print, and what does it quote?
| Cost | What Toast prints | Where to get the rest |
|---|---|---|
| Starter Kit | Starter Kit: starting at $0/month, for one location with up to 2 terminals | Toast's online shop or a sales rep |
| Point of Sale plan | Point of Sale: starting at $69/month, with "flat-rate processing" | Your quote sets the final monthly fee |
| Build Your Own | Custom pricing | A quote |
| POS and payroll bundle for new restaurants | Payroll bundle: $69/month + $9 per employee/month | A quote |
| Visa, Mastercard and Discover | Not printed; Toast says it builds "a rate for you based on your business" | Ask for it in writing |
| American Express | Amex: 3.29% + 15¢ card-present and 3.89% + 15¢ card-not-present | Custom pricing above $500k a year in card sales |
| Hardware and installation | Not printed; Toast says these vary by package and install needs | Your quote, or the kit builder in Toast's shop |
The plan prices come from Toast's pricing page. Its footnotes say they apply to new customers and single locations only, and include the first hardware terminal subscription, with extra charges for more devices. The Amex rates and the $500k threshold sit in the footnotes of Toast's starter kit page. Toast Care support runs 24/7 and comes with every software subscription at no extra cost.
Which add-ons carry their own fees?
Toast's pricing chart lists modules such as Toast Mobile Order & Pay, Digital Storefront Pro, Marketing Essentials (email, loyalty and gift cards), Payroll Essentials and Pro, xtraCHEF, and Restaurant Management Essentials and Pro. Its legend marks some features "available with add-on; additional fees may apply," and none carries a printed price. List the ones you want and get each monthly fee on the quote.
- Instant deposit: Toast's instant deposit FAQ says Toast takes a 1.75% fee from each instant deposit, up to $10,000 per 24 hours. A $2,000 transfer costs $35.
- Payroll: on per-employee billing, Toast's payroll billing article counts every active employee on the first check date of the month, whether or not that person is paid. Move leavers to inactive before that date.
- Online ordering: Toast's online ordering page says no commissions, and Toast Delivery Services charges flat delivery fees. The fee amount is not printed there.
How can you pay for Toast hardware?
Toast's payment options page lists two routes. You can pay upfront for hardware, installation, shipping and taxes. Or you can use Toast Easy Pay, a 180-day lease in the United States. Toast then collects 0.75% of your daily card sales once you are live, or 1.75% before you go live, and takes any balance left at the end by ACH. At the end you can buy the hardware. The pricing page also mentions 0% interest financing by application.
A third route, Pay-as-you-Go, sits inside the Starter Kit. Toast's comparison page footnote says it adds a platform fee on each transaction and carries a 2 year agreement.
What does the merchant agreement say about term, renewal and leaving?
Toast's merchant agreement (last updated September 10, 2025) sets these rules:
- Term: the initial term is set in your order. It starts on the contract start date or your go-live date, whichever comes first.
- Renewal: the agreement renews for one-year periods unless either side gives at least 30 days' written notice before the term ends. Each renewal runs on the agreement then in force, and earlier promotions end.
- Price changes: software fees stay fixed during the initial term. Card processing rates and other non-software fees can change at any time with 30 days' written notice. Any fee can change at the start of, or during, a renewal term with the same notice.
- Your way out of a rate rise: if Toast raises your card rates or the core POS subscription, you can end the agreement by written notice before the change takes effect, and the early termination fee does not apply. Keep using Toast past that date and you have accepted the change.
- Early termination fee: the software subscription fees left in the term, or on Pay-as-you-go, $150 for each month left. Any processing fee for software financing is added.
- Your data: after termination you have 30 days to ask for access to pull your data. After that, Toast may delete it.
What would a month on Toast cost? A worked example
Every input below is made up, including the card rate. Toast does not print a Visa, Mastercard or Discover rate, so the example uses an assumed quote of 2.49% + 15¢. Replace it with the rate on your own quote. The restaurant is one counter-service location on the Point of Sale plan at its $69 starting price, with $40,000 a month in card sales across 1,000 payments at $40 each. Ten percent of card sales are American Express. The example leaves out tax, add-ons, hardware and cash.
| Line | Input | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Software | Point of Sale at its starting price | Software line: $69.00 |
| Visa, Mastercard, Discover | $36,000 across 900 payments at an assumed 2.49% + 15¢ | Quoted-rate line: $1,031.40 |
| American Express | $4,000 across 100 payments at Toast's printed 3.29% + 15¢ | Amex line: $146.60 |
| Total | $40,000 in card sales | Total: $1,247.00 |
Processing comes to $1,178, about 2.95% of card sales. Each 0.1 point on the quoted rate moves this month by $36, so the rate matters more than the plan fee. On the payroll bundle with 12 active employees, the software line would be $177 ($69 plus 12 × $9).
Now the exit. Suppose the order sets a 24-month term with only the $69 software fee, and you leave after month 10. The fee is 14 months × $69, or $966. On a 2-year Pay-as-you-Go plan, 14 months × $150 is $2,100.
If you took Easy Pay while live, 180 days at $40,000 per 30 days is $240,000 in card sales. At 0.75%, Toast would withhold $1,800. On a made-up $3,000 lease, Toast would collect the other $1,200 by ACH at the end.
How do you read a Toast processing statement?
Toast's processing statements guide explains each line. Find the report in Toast Web under Reports, then Payments. Each statement covers the prior calendar month and posts in the first week of the next.
- Fees: the card fees at your processing rate. Divide by card sales to get your real rate, then compare it with your quote.
- Fee adjustments and monthly adjustments: Toast estimates fees on each sale before your next-day deposit, then trues them up to actual fees at month end.
- Other withholdings: one figure that can include marketplace facilitator tax, Toast Delivery Services, Toast Capital, instant deposits and Easy Pay. Check the source report for each part.
- Bank charges: codes such as CCD and EOM on your bank statement usually match the processing statement. Ask Toast about any other code.
What should you ask before you sign?
- What is my Visa, Mastercard and Discover rate, in person and typed in, in writing?
- How long is the initial term in my order, and which software fees would the exit fee count?
- What does each device cost, and is it bought, leased on Easy Pay, or included in the plan?
- Which add-ons are on my quote, and what is each monthly fee?
- Is my plan Pay-as-you-Go? If so, what is the platform fee on each transaction?
- Who on my team will watch for 30-day notices of rate changes, and for the renewal date?
