A soul food kitchen too busy to pick up
Good Thangz Cookin is a family-owned soul food restaurant that Chef Allen founded in 2022 on Shepherd Lane, “with hopes of bringing good soul food to the Cincinnati community.” It has since moved to Mill Street in Lockland. The menu is Southern classics made from scratch, from fried chicken and collard greens to mac and cheese and ribs, and it caters family reunions, weddings and office lunches.
By this summer, Good Thangz was doing about 1,500 to 1,600 orders a month, most of them takeout. “We’re mostly takeout,” Walter, who manages the restaurant, told Maple in July, “but, uh, such a busy lobby that we can’t answer the phones.” He put the missed calls at about 20 a day, “especially during the rushes... Both phone lines are ringing. It’s, it’s crazy.”

Walter was clear about one thing Maple should not do: catering. Budgets run from about $250 to $2,000, and he wants a person to shape each one to the customer: “it’s best for a human to deal with... all catering orders.” Those requests used to arrive by voicemail or email and wait for someone to notice them.
